Project concept

For this project we have been asked how we would bring Portuguese culture into a city like Manchester. This will later be translated into an existing building. Our first area of research is to create a small film based on our own findings of Portuguese culture such as music, dance, food, Architecture etc to create a certain mood that we would like to portray to any audience.

Feature walls

I have a couple of voids in my building with double height ceiling space and thought it might be interesting to use them as feature walls. The top three pictures are music based, one of them is used in my finished rendered drawing the picture is of a famous Portuguese Fado singer called Amalia Rodriguez.

Third and fourth floor

Both the third and fourth floors were originally going to be student accommodation, but after working out the size of the rooms it was decided that the space was too small. I then went on to look at tutors or visiting staff accommodation, meaning staff that were traveling to the school from another part of the country or even a different country could stay over in one of the flats/apartments. There will be a flat/apartment on each of the third and fourth floors.

Second floor

Below are some precedent studies I have researched on different study/reading areas that I found interesting. Shown in the green and white reading picture just below you can see where I got my idea from for the same type of seating on my hand drawn picture.

The second floor is solely for the purpose of students and staff, the public are not permitted to be on this floor or the floors above. A small kitchen, lounge, and social area are on the left and there is a small library, audio library and seating area that will be used for study and hobbies. staff offices and toilets will also be on this floor with the feature wall extending from the floor below to ceiling height of the second floor and a void allowing people to look down on the performance hall.

First floor

This floor is for both the public and students attending the music school. On the left a computer room and tutorial rooms can be entered via the private staircase to the rear of the building (to be used by staff and students only). The left hand side of the building can be used by the public as a multipurpose hall, students will put on performances here. Toilets will also be situated at the back of the building, concealed by a large feature wall. I have also provided another drawing, this time of the multi purpose hall which will also be later rendered.

wine bar and reception area

My wine bar, which I have provided a drawing for my presentation which will later have been rendered in photoshop.

I looked at reception areas under stairways almost like a hybrid staicasae this would provide more room for customers to walk round the ground floor, but then realised based on the plans it would be too far to walk from the entrance to the stairway to purchase tickets so I settled for a stand alone desk at the front of the building. I found some other images on interesting stairways for an idea of how mine would look in public areas of the building.

My reception will be based on the ground floor on the right of the wine bar. Here customers or family and friends can purchase tickets to see the shows that will be put on the floor above entered from the public access staircase or from the lift at the back of the building. The reception area will consist of a reception desk/ticket booth, small seating area, option to enter the student merchandise shop and toilets.

feature wall in bar

Although I have decided that my building will be quite contemporary, I would still like the wine bar to have a feel for portuguese culture or traditional concept. I found some displays for my feature wall that show both old and new mixed together.
